Proposed increase to monthly utility bills

Your bills could be a little more expensive this year with some rate changes in 2017 for Aquatera services. CEO Bernd Manz says water and waste water charges are proposed at a 2.3 to 2.4 per cent increase.

“On the solid waste side, our garbage collection and recycling charges will drop by 2 per cent. It is the first decrease in charges that we have seen. It is a result of having a increased amount of disposal at our landfill.”

With the changes, the average household will see an increase on their bills of about $1.50 while people could pay up to $9.50 more on their bills in Clairmont.

“The Clairmont system is at capacity from a waste water treatment perspective. The long term solution is to pump the waste water from the Clairmont lagoon for treatment at our plant through trunk sewers within the city. To be able to fund that, it requires a higher increase.”

Manz says rates in Clairmont have been historically lower but with the increase, the rates in the city will be similar. The rates would come into effect on March 1st, 2017.

Aquatera has $93 million going toward projects for this year. Manz says one significant project is the Wapiti River Facility at a cost of around $20 million.
