Excavator used to cause severe damage to pipeline

UPDATE #2: Darrel Purdy, Corporate Operating Officer for the Paramount Resources’ West Kaybob area says the company is still evaluating what all will need to be done to repair the damage and finish construction so the pipeline can go into service.

“We have taken steps to improve security, so a security team during the off hours and further securing the equipment that’s used for the construction.”

The section that was damaged was an empty steel pipe that was partially in a ditch.

UPDATE: The Alberta Energy Regulator has confirmed that the pipeline is owned by Paramount Resources. The line was under construction at the time and no product was spilled.

Someone has done more than half a million dollars worth of damage to an oilfield site north of Hythe. An unnamed company reported the mischief to Beaverlodge RCMP on Sunday and an investigation is underway.

Corporal Shawn Graham says an excavator was used to cause severe damage to a pipeline. The section will have to be replaced, and the total damage is pegged at $500,000 to $700,000.
