4 Ways You Can Help Grande Prairie be a Safer Place in 2017

Happy New Year Grande Prairie!

It’s January, and that means it’s the time of year where many people make resolutions for the upcoming year. While you may have written a list filled with fitness & nutrition goals, or professional development goals, we’d like you to consider adding one more. How about helping us make Grande Prairie a safer place to live?

There are a few easy ways you can help out:

  1. Meet your neighbours! It’s proven that connected communities where citizens look out for one another are safer. Make an effort to introduce yourself to your neighbours on all sides of you and get their contact information in case of emergencies. Try to take the time to learn the addresses as well- if a house across the alley from you caught fire, would you know the address to give to 911? It’s useful information to know. Come by City on 99 and pick up a “My neighbour” card to help you start a conversation.
  2. Take note of the two anonymous phone lines where you can report information on prostitution and on drug houses. The Report a John line is: 780-830-7077 and the Report a Drug House line is: 780-830-7444.
  3. Use the RCMP non-emergency line instead of 911 when appropriate. Use 780-830-5700 when reporting a crime that’s already been committed and no suspects are present, when reporting suspicious activity, when reporting a missing person, and reporting suspected drug activity.
  4. If you witness a violation of the traffic safety act, use the Operation Traffic Watch program to report it. Resist posting the photos to Facebook, and instead send them to Enforcement services officer so it can be followed up on. You can find more information about the program here: http://www.cityofgp.com/index.aspx?page=1074

Thanks in advance for your assistance! We’re looking forward to a great 2017!
