Tent caterpillars noticeable in Grande Prairie this summer

While an outbreak of forest tent caterpillars like last year isn’t likely, they will be noticeable in Grande Prairie this summer.

Integrated Pest Management Coordinator Jim Donnelly says they will be prominent on cherry and hybrid poplar trees.

“We’ve been seeing exponential growth in the local number of forest tent caterpillars, and they will be around in the tens of thousands, but they’re not going to defoliate the city or anything like that.”

Nests are best found early in the morning when it’s colder.

Anyone with an infestation should scrape them off the tree and squish them.
