Parts of Grande Prairie close to traffic noise limit

The City has identified some of the worst spots for traffic noise in Grande Prairie. Mics were set up in backyards near main roads to measure how loud it gets during the night and day. The limit for existing neighbourhoods is 65 decibels. Project Technologist Andrew Booth says a spot on Wapiti Road and Pinnacle, and another on 68th Avenue between Resources Road and 92nd Street were at higher levels.

“They’re not over the threshold but they are close so they are concerning. Once it gets to a certain decibel level then the city would most likely look into some mitigation.”

Noise from the train going past is likely a part of the problem for 68th, while cars on Pinnacle Drive adds to Wapiti Road. Resources near the intersection with 84th Avenue is also up there. Those areas will be monitored again in two years, and if still a problem, the city could consider putting in berms or a sound fence.
