New Alberta Liberal leader announced next June

The race to pick a new leader for the Alberta Liberal Party will kick off next month. A vote was originally scheduled for April 2016, but it was pushed back to next spring. MLA David Swann has served as interim leader in the meantime.

Nominations will be open from January 16th through March 31st with debates in Calgary on April 8th and Edmonton on May 6th. Party members can then vote online from May 27th to June 3rd and the leader will announced the next day.

President Karen Sevcik says she sees the race as an opportunity for the party as the NDP loses popularity. They went from five seats to one in the 2015 election.
