Police testing out roadside tests for drug-impaired drivers

The federal government, RCMP and police departments across the country will be testing out a system to tell when someone is driving high on drugs. The pilot project includes two roadside testing devices.

They check saliva for the presence of drugs like marijuana, cocaine, meth and opioids. Officers will be trained to use them, and will try them out on drivers and passengers who anonymously volunteer to give a sample. The results won’t be used in court.

No police forces in Alberta are part of the project, but if successful they could become a part of regular operations.
