You could soon see amateur fighting events in the city. At the last city council meeting of 2016, a bylaw was passed that will allow for the events to go ahead.
Councillor Rory Tarant says there were problems with fighters having to travel long distances to be on a full amateur ticket. They were also only able to fight in pro-am events in the city.
The decision has been years in the making as there was confusion passed down from the federal and provincial governments about what was under the combative sport rules. More recently, the province has given municipalities the power over the events.
Tarant says he has been talking to promoters and this will open up the possibility for MMA spectacle events, sparring, and skills development.
