2day FM Cares for Kids Radiothon funds purchase of neonatal cribs

The Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation will be able to buy four new neonatal cribs for the QEII Hospital thanks to the 3rd annual 2day FM Cares for Kids Radiothon. The radio station broadcast live from the Prairie Mall for 12 hours straight Thursday, but it was the generosity of the community that made the event a success.

The neonatal cribs are used for twins to co-sleep after they’re born. The practice is widely used in NICUs to help premature twins develop. Sleeping together helps them regulate each other’s body temperature and comfort each other.

An average of 2,000 babies are born in Grande Prairie every year, and over the past twelve months, that included 26 sets of twins. A 27th set was born Thursday.

More than $16,000 was raised in 2015 to buy five brand new, state of the art, vital monitoring systems for the Pediatric Day Surgery Unit. The first radiothon in 2014 raised $20,000 to buy a neonatal incubator for the neonatal intensive care unit. All equipment will be moved to the new hospital when it opens.
