Government bringing back written portion of math exams

Alberta is bringing back the written portion of high school diploma math exams. It was removed in 2010 by the previous Conservative government, but will be returned by the NDP in 2018.

Education Minister David Eggen says the move is one of many they’re making to help boost math marks in the province. Grade nine students also won’t be able to use a calculator on part of the math provincial achievement test.

To help teachers, the government is also introducing a new program that will give them access to up to $2,000 to help cover post-secondary education to upgrade their math skills. A total of $2 million dollars will be included in the budget.
