Lane closure on Highway 43 after crashes north of Whitecourt

Anyone heading to Grande Prairie through Whitecourt will have some delays to deal with over the next couple of days. Highway 43 northbound is down to one lane on Chickadee Hill after multiple collisions Sunday morning.

First, a tractor-trailer hauling fuel went into the ditch. The driver had minor injuries and only diesel from the tractor’s tanks leaked. As fire and EMS responded, a second semi went into the ditch nearby, and then a third hit a fire truck parked at the bottom of the hill. That driver didn’t stop, but they’ve been ID’d by police and are facing charges.

Alberta Environment will likely be on scene through the early part of this week, and the area will be down to 50 kilometres an hour with the left hand lane closed. There was heavy fog and icy conditions at the time.
