City council reviewing budget for 2017

City council will be reviewing its budget for 2017 Friday. Grande Prairie runs on a four year cycle, but councillors crack open the books every year to see whether any changes should be made.

A 4.2 per cent property tax increase was forecast in the 2015 to 2018 budget, but it was reduced to 3.6 per cent in 2015 and 2.25 per cent in 2016. The City is looking at a $1.2 million increase in revenue for 2017, along with a 1.3 million reduction in expenditures. That could lead to the projected property tax increase of 4.2 per cent being lowered to 2.3.

Council will also be looking at a number of funding requests. The biggest ticket item is $2.3 million to renovate the Community Social Development building, followed by $2 million to build a grandstand at the Community Knowledge Campus field. Councillors will also be looking at spending $955,000 for work to repave 116th Street from 68th Avenue south the the city limits.

The city will also hear funding requests from the Grande Prairie and District Victim Services Unit, the Centre for Creative Arts, the Bear Creek Folk Festival, and the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum.
