$25-a-day daycare to be offered at 18 centres across Alberta

The provincial government is looking to create 18 Early Learning and Child Care Centres to offer a maximum of $25-a-day childcare next year. The program was an election promise for the NDP, but due to the province’s financial situation, they’re starting with just a $10 million pilot project.

Non-profit organizations are being asked to apply, and then the approved locations will get up to $500,000 in funding for their first year, which could be followed by two more years of support. The child-care centres will be expected to have flexible options for parents doing shift work, be in accessible locations, and have supports for children with special needs.

At least one will be in the province’s northwest region, which stretches to Grande Cache and Chipewyan Lake.
