Prevention focus of National Addictions Awareness Week

Organizations across the country have dedicated this week to helping residents prevent and overcome addiction and substance abuse as part of National Addictions Awareness Week.

Information sessions are being held in communities around the Peace Country, including the annual Walk for Sobriety in Grande Prairie Saturday. People will gather for an open house at the Salvation Army, and walk to the Friendship Centre for an Indigenous pipe ceremony, feast and round dance.

Albertans can also find an Addiction Prevention Toolkit on Alberta Health Services’ website. It has tips on building healthy relationships and positive behaviours. AHS Provincial Medical Director of Addiction and Mental Health Doctor Nicholas Mitchell says they include asking friends how they’re doing, engaging others and taking care of yourself.
