Saskatchewan to pass Alberta in oil and gas drilling in 2017: PSAC

The number of wells forecast to be drilled in Alberta next year is up, but for likely the first time ever, it’s Saskatchewan that’s expected to lead the country.

The Petroleum Services Association of Canada predicts 1,940 wells will be drilled in that province in 2017, up 240 from 2016. That’s just ahead of Alberta, which is looking at a possible 1,900 wells, an increase of 53.

Overall, President Mark Salkeld says they’re seeing a small uptick in activity as the industry heads into winter drilling and completion season, but a significant ramp up over what’s forecast doesn’t look likely. While Canada-wide, numbers are looking up, the projection of 4,175 is still 63 per cent lower than 2014.
