Family Violence Prevention month proclaimed in Grande Prairie

Family Violence Prevention month has been made official in Grande Prairie. After being around the province since 1986, City Mayor Bill Given proclaimed November as a month to fight against abusive family environments.

The province has been recognizing the month for 30 years after it was ignited by the Hinton Society for the Prevention of Family Violence. It was started as an education campaign to improve local services and prevent family violence.

Initiatives have been launched in the last few years that aim to prevent family violence. In August 2016, the government passed the Residential Tenancies Amendment Act which allows someone renting to end a lease agreement early with no financial penalty. There has been $11.6 million given in Family and Community Safety grants given by Human Services to 53 projects.
