Grande Prairie housing starts drop for fifth straight month

Construction on new homes in Grande Prairie dropped by 85 per cent last month. There was an anomaly of 175 housing starts in September 2015, 170 of which were multi-unit homes.

That dropped down to 11 in 2016, so although the number of single family starts more than tripled from 5 to 16, the total for the month is 27. Year-to-date, stats are down by more than 40 per cent, also due to the drop in multiple family homes.

The County saw a slight drop in housing starts in the third quarter of the year, and is down 15 per cent through the first nine months. Notably, single family homes are down by more than 50 per cent, while multi-unit buildings are up by 213.
