Local MP to help oversee Ukraine's presidential elections

Local MP Chris Warkentin is on his way overseas to take part in Ukraine’s presidential election taking place May 25.

The country’s parliament has requested the presence of over 2700 international observers to help keep the elections fair and free from intimidation.

Warkentin says over 500 Canadians have volunteered to take part, and will be spread out at different polling stations across the country.

“We will observe and ensure that the processes are being undertaken correctly. So we will be third party watchers to ensure that everyone is doing their job and that there isn’t any monkeying around, so to speak, at the polling stations.”

The federal government is footing the bill to have Warkentin and the other 11 MP’s take part, as part of their effort to help establish a free and independent Ukraine.
