Alberta to review Fort McMurray wildfire response

A third party will be reviewing the province’s response to the wildfires in Fort McMurray. It will look at support given to the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, the evacuation of communities, and emergency social services for evacuees.

Minister of Municipal Affairs Danielle Larivee argues it’s important to independently review the response to figure out where the province can improve for future emergencies. The report is expected to be done by next summer.

The May wildfire was the third major disaster in Alberta over the last five years, and reviews were done for both the 2013 southern Alberta floods and the 2011 Slave Lake fire.
