Risk of identity fraud from unauthorized blue bag collection

Grande Prairie residents are being encouraged not to toss personal documents in their recycling bags, after an unknown person was spotted picking them up in Pinnacle this morning.

Aquatera says the person was in a red van collecting blue bags set out for collection in the subdivision. However, they are not employed by the utility or the companies who are contracted to do curbside collection.

Interim Recycling Manager Brent Giesbrecht explains that while it’s possible the person was looking for refundable items, identity fraud is also a risk. Shredding any personal info is recommended before recycling, along with keeping out any deposit items.

If caught, the suspect can be fined under the utility bylaw, so residents are asked to report any similar activity.
