Hundreds of goldfish to be removed from Muskoseepi pond

Starting next week, hundreds of goldfish will be eradicated from the Muskoseepi pond.

The City of Grande Prairie is putting up signs around the area in order to get people to stay away while they inject pellet form Rotenone into the water which will rid of the fish.

Environmental Stewardship Department and Alberta Fish and Wildlife investigated reports of goldfish found in the pond in April. They found that the fish had been intentionally put in the water and have spent at least one winter there. They are invasive to the natural environment which means they need to be removed. The city says that removing the fish by catching them has not worked and they will now put the chemical into the water next week which will kill them.

Environmentalist Kase DeVries says people may notice a chemical smell and a pump lowering the water level to prepare.
