Federal government commits $9M to Wembley water line

Federal funding has been announced to move ahead plans for a water transmission line to Wembley. Just over $9 million has been committed, and the town is now waiting to hear from the province.

While the hope is to one day extend the line to Beaverlodge, Hythe and Horse Lake First Nation, Wembley Mayor Chris Turnmire says they’re the top priority.

“Because we had water issues this summer, in terms of having the capacity, and we had those water issues last year, so for us to continue to maintain what we require for water supply for residents, our aquifers aren’t going to be the long-term solution.”

While the town waits on a provincial funding announcement, Turnmire says they’ll be moving forward with an RFP for the design. Based on a study completed last year, it’s expected the regional water line will cost $23 million.
