Safety patrollers help others cross the road in school zones

It’s the first day of school and this means school zones are back in effect until the end of June. From 7:30 in the morning until 4:30 in the afternoon, the speed is 30 kilometres an hour near schools.

Shelley Bienderra from AMA explains that the AMA School Safety patrollers will be back on the job today at Aspen Grove School.

“Four eager patrollers will be at the cross walk. The other schools aren’t going to have the patrollers just yet but they will be out after they go to school and get training. Pay attention to the patrollers wearing the vest and the stop signs. They are a good visual for drivers. They are keeping the younger students safe so they have a really important job.”

There are 15 schools in Grande Prairie involved in the program which has kids from their school help others cross the road.

Bienderra explains that slowing down is important in these zones because a lot of the children heading back to school are excited and may dart out into traffic.
