12 year old dies after near drowning in Dawson Creek lake

A 12 year old girl who nearly drowned in Dawson Creek’s Rotary Lake last weekend has passed away. The incident happened in the early evening hours Saturday.

People at the park were able to get the girl to shore, but she had been submerged for several minutes before she was found. Emergency responders began lifesaving responders as she was transported to the Dawson Creek Hospital and then flown to a hospital in southern B.C.

Corporal Dan Moskaluk has confirmed she died in their care on Thursday. Although an investigation into her death continues, RCMP believe a lake intake grate may have trapped her under water. At their request, the lake has been drained so investigators can look at the bottom and ensure the public is safe.
