City recovering from heavy rainfall

Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership activated the emergency operations centre to help with an increase in calls due to flooding in areas of the cit after heavy rainfall hit the region early Tuesday evening.

The operations centre has been de-activated as water levels go down around the city but GPREP does want people to still be careful. They say that flooded areas, as well as areas near the Bear Creek and storm ponds can be dangerous.

The City’s Transportation Dept does have barricades in place marking roadway hazards. Manhole covers can become dislodged when flooding happens and the city would like residents to report any missing manhole covers that they see.

After rumours of the QE II hospital shutting down from water damage, an AHS spokesperson says that the hospital is fully operational. There has been some flooding in the hospital but all areas of the building including labour and delivery as well as emergency care have seen patient care affected.

Eastlink Centre’s Facebook page still reports being closed until further notice due to heavy rainfall.
