Fort McMurray getting advance of provincial disaster relief funds

The province is giving the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo an advance of $87.5 million to help with wildfire recovery efforts. The fires in May caused an estimated $3.58 billion in damaged and it’s expected to be the most costly disaster ever for insurance providers.

The initial advance of Disaster Recovery Program funding is intended to help with costs that aren’t covered by insurance, like emergency response, the evacuation of 80,000 people, cleaning damaged areas and public spaces and repairing public infrastructure. The municipality expects its total response to cost about 175 million, so the advance should cover half.
