Explosion destroys Mountview area home

What caused an explosion that destroyed a Mountview area home and damaged others is still under investigation. Firefighters responded to the home in the area of 112 Avenue and 96 Street around 4:20 a.m. Saturday morning.

The force of the blast had knocked the walls off of the foundation of the one storey home and the roof had already collapsed into it. Platoon Chief Tony Lutzmann says there was debris scattered around the home and fires had spread to nearby homes. One fire spread into the attic of the home to the east, while minor damage was done to the exterior of the home to the west.

Everyone in the neighbouring homes was able to evacuate safely, along with a woman in the home at the time of the explosion. She was able to walk away with paramedics and was taken to hospital in unknown condition.

Firefighters were on the scene for about four hours. An estimate of damage is not available at this time.
