Students at Elmworth School are already enjoying a new fitness centre after the equipment was delivered yesterday.
It includes treadmills, elliptical machines, spin bikes, and free weights.
Principal Christian Gee hopes having the gym at the school will help promote healthy lifestyles.
“We want to have our kids prepared for track and field and for any other sports activities that they like to pursue. The habits that they start now as a teenager are ones that they’re going to carry throughout their life.”
The school was able to afford the new price thanks to a grant from ConocoPhilips that covered the entire cost.
Christian Gee says he was originally quoted $40,000 for a centre from Apple Fitness.
“The quote was unfortunately way over our budget, but in staying in contact with the representative there, he was able to furnish us with some refurbished equipment from Grande Prairie, and actually a couple new pieces of equipment that they threw in.”
The school’s 65 K-9 students are now using the facility, but Principal Christian Gee hopes to open it up to their families and ConocoPhilips employees soon.
