Horses back at Evergreen Park

The Alberta Derby will be back at Evergreen Park for a second time this year. The prestigious horse racing event will be held on July 31st, at the same time as the Grande Prairie Derby. It was first held here in 2015, and General Manager Dan Gorman believes its return is a testament to the high quality track at Gordon Badger Stadium.

“I don’t think there’s any question. Every trainer and horse owner that comes up and runs on Evergreen Park says that because of our unique sand loam base we have the most incredible track anywhere. We also have a wonderful track manager in Doug Love, who does a great job in keeping that track pristine with his crew.”

This year’s Alberta Derby purse is $50,000, and as usual, guests will come dressed up and in their best derby hats. Ladies will also have a chance to show off those hats a week early at a tea party this Sunday under the grandstand.

Outside of the derby, racing runs Friday and Saturdays at 6:30 p.m. and Sundays at 1 until August 28th. Gorman argues it’s an inexpensive family day out that doesn’t have to involve gambling.

“No admission charge at all to come out and watch horses. A lot of things on site as well like a bouncy castle, sand piles and stuff for the kids. I just really would invite all of Grande Prairie and area to come out and enjoy a no charge experience and fun for the whole family.”

If you do want to place a bet, Evergreen Park has people on hand to walk you through the program and help you learn how it works.
