Fatal Nexen Long Lake explosion blamed on employees

Executives at Nexen have blamed an explosion at their Long Lake facility on the two men that died as a result. 52 year old Drew Foster was killed at the scene of the January 15th explosion, and 30 year old Dave Williams passed away in hospital on the 25th.

The two men were changing the valves on the site’s hydrocracker at the time. However, senior vice president of Canadian operations Ron Bailey says they were working outside the scope of their approved work activities.

He adds that it’s believed decisions they made caused the explosion, but wouldn’t elaborate. A final report has not yet been published.
