Grande Prairie region wildfire hazard now moderate

The wildfire hazard has gone up again in the Grande Prairie Forest Area. Wildfire Information Officer Melinda Paplawski says fine fuels like grass and leaves are drying out in warmer weather, which makes it easier for a blaze to start.

The province is also looking for any lightning holdover fires burning underground that could emerge when it’s warm and windy. So far this season, 57 fires have burned almost 138-thousand hectares of land in the region, but none are currently active. There are no fire bans in effect either.
