The fundraiser for the Afghanistan Memorial for Veteran’s Park began over the weekend. A poker run kicked off at Revolution Place with Honour Guard to begin the ride. It was held in conjunction with the motorcycle and tattoo festival held there over the weekend.
The initial target for fundraising is $50,000 to create a monument that would commemorate the 158 lives lost in the Afghanistan war. Canadian Army Veterans Unit member Renee Charbonneau is the driving force behind the fundraiser and would like to add a light armoured vehicle. That would make the new goal closer to $70,000.
The fundraiser this past weekend raised just over $1,000.
They will now work with the Canadian Legacy Project to help with grant applications and do other community drives.
