Officials break ground on new Sexsmith fire hall

A sod turning ceremony for the new fire hall in Sexsmith was held Tuesday. The $1.4 million facility will be located along 95th Avenue, next to Gibson Energy, which donated the land.

The County had provided $500,000 towards the project, while the province has committed $350,000. The rest will be covered by the town.

Just last September, the County of Grande Prairie’s Regional Fire Service renewed its contract to manage the town’s fire operations. The current fire hall is beyond repair at 30 years old, and the new one is needed for the area’s expanding need.

The multi-story steel building will have three drive-through bays, and room for more training and indoor storage of equipment. Construction should be done by late December or early January.
