Afghanistan monument fundraiser begins

A new memorial will be put up in Veteran’s Park in Grande Prairie. The start to fundraising for an Afghanistan Monument project will be marked this weekend with a special ceremony at Revolution Place. The event will begin at 10:00 with registration for the Poker Run.

The Monument will be to commemorate the 158 lives lost during the war in Afghanistan. The initial target for fundraising is $50,000. Canadian Army Veterans Unit member Renee Charbonneau brought the idea to the city to have a monument with the names of those fallen. She would like to have the addition of a Light Armoured Vehicle once the first portion is created which would cost around $15,000 plus the transportation fees from Ontario.

Mayor Bill Given and MP Chris Warkentin will be at the event to say a few words and an honour guard will ride through at 11:45.

There is an ongoing crowdfunding campaign for the project.
