Alberta education curriculum getting an overhaul

The province is taking the next six years to overhaul its education curriculum. Education Minister David Eggen announced this morning that what children learn in all subjects will be updated starting in September.

It will be changed in stages, starting with Kindergarten to grade 4 by 2018, followed by grades 5 to 8 by late 2019. High school classes will be developed between 2020 and 2022. The current curriculum will remain in effect in the meantime.

Parents will be given an opportunity to give feedback on the changes through in-person meetings and an online survey. The total cost is estimated at just over $64 million, of which $4 million is earmarked for consultations with Indigenous people.

The six subject areas are arts, language arts, math, social studies, sciences and wellness.
