Fenced rearing facility part of province’s plan to protect caribou

The province has released a draft plan to try and protect threatened caribou herds in northern Alberta. Included in the program is the construction of a fenced caribou rearing facility of around 100 square kilometres to help raise calves to yearlings.

The government is also looking at getting industry to cover the $40 million cost of restoring more than 10-thousand kilometres of seismic lines near the Little Smoky and A La Peche herds. The action plan recommends continuing to shoot wolves to reduce predators, and to reduce forest harvesting until the rearing facility is complete.

The province is required by federal law to come up with a recovery plan by late next year. The draft is currently up for public comment.
