Fort McMurray wildfire 70 per cent contained

The Fort McMurray wildfire is now 70 per cent contained. It’s still burning more than 581,000 hectares, with a 984 kilometre perimeter. Unrelated to the blaze, an apartment downtown was destroyed by fire Monday. Fortunately, the building was empty at the time for restoration work, and the cause is under investigation.

The phased, voluntary re-entry of residents is now done for all zones. People with properties that have been deemed “destroyed or unsafe to occupy” outside the restricted areas of Abasand, Beacon Hill and Waterways were able to start visiting their homes Sunday. Visits to destroyed properties in those neighbourhoods will start Wednesday.
