High winds increase fire hazard to very high

Winds are expected to continue today which has the fire hazard in the Grande Prairie Forest Area increasing to Very High. Environment Canada says winds could gust from 20 to 40 km/h this afternoon. Alberta Wildfire says you must evaluate conditions before burning. They add that permit conditions include wind conditions which say you should not burn if the winds are blowing 12 km/h or more.

It’s suspected that a fire sparked over the weekend in the Grande Prairie Forest Protection Area was lightning caused. Alberta Wildfire says the 1 hectare blaze is in the Deep Valley area but it is being held. Helicopters as well water trucks are working in the area.
