Veteran’s park designated for an Afghanistan Memorial

158 Canadian soldiers died in Canada’s Afghanistan mission between 2002 and 2011, which will now be remembered with a monument in Veteran’s park. The city has designated the park for the future placement of the statue after Canadian Army Veterans Motorcycle Units member Renee Charbonneau approached them earlier this year. She says she will now work to get the money and then work with the city to decide where the memorial will sit.

“There is a couple of places within that park. One of the places is right up by the main road so that it would draw attention. If there is a L.A.V. unit, they are rather large. It would bring notice.”

She will now be working to get at least $50,000 for the granite monument plus install fees. They are also looking at an addition of a light armoured vehicle unit at an additional $15,000.

There will be a poker run on June 25th to raise awareness and funds for the project.
