Grande Prairie to remember residents lost to homelessness

A time to remember those who have lost their lives to homelessness will take place this Thursday. The Homeless Action Team has organized the Healing Hearts 1st Annual Homeless Memorial at the Muskoseepi greenspace at the train trestle bridge. Rotary House Client Care Manager Travis Kowalski says it is a chance to acknowledge those who have lost their lives to homelessness.

“It’s an important event to have in our community. We know it exists in other communities, but it’s important to have it here in Grande Prairie just to acknowledge those lives that we’ve lost to homelessness and to celebrate the individuals that we’ve known and supported through this community; not just through service providers but the whole community together.”

Starting at noon on May 26th, there will be an elder starting the memorial with a ceremony. Anyone who has lost someone to homelessness is asked to bring a piece of paper with their name on it. The names will be collected and sent with the elder to Calgary for a special ceremony.

There were eight reported deaths of homeless people in Grande Prairie last year.
