Fort McMurray wildfire grows to 423,000 hectares

The wildfire in Fort McMurray grew substantially overnight. It’s now estimated to be 423,000 hectares in size. Another hot day is expected, so more growth is likely.

The fire didn’t reach the Saskatchewan border yesterday as predicted, but it’s only five kilometres away. At this point officials say the blaze is not a danger to the province, but there are concerns about smoke in the closest community La Loche.

At the same time, Noralta says its lodges off Aostra Road are still standing thanks to the efforts of firefighters. The company says the next 24 hours will be critical due to high temperatures and wind. A mandatory evacuation order remains in effect for all work camps north of the city.
