Fire hazard extreme in Grande Prairie region

The wildfire hazard in the Grande Prairie Forest Protection Area is back up to extreme again. Information Officer Kelly Burke says the weather Sunday will lead to crossover conditions, and any fire that starts could spread quickly and be hard to control.

Both a fire ban and an OHV ban remain in place for the region. Fire bans are also still in effect for the City and County of Grande Prairie.

There’s a fire burning 25 kilometres southwest of Grovedale. Provincial firefighters were helped by the Grovedale Fire Department today and the blaze is considered under control at 0.7 hectares. Some digging and feeling for heat is needed before it can be considered extinguished.

Crews from Beaverlodge, Hythe, and Wembley also responded to four brush fires in the Hinton Trail Hall area Saturday. They have all been put out and the County is looking into their cause.
