Fort McMurray wildfire could double in size Saturday

Weather is not cooperating as crews battle the fire at Fort McMurray, which is now 101,000 hectares in size. There’s a chance that could double by the end of the day Saturday. The fire reached Anzac last night and we now have confirmation that between 18 and 20 structures there have been destroyed.

However, today’s convoy from oil and gas camps north of the city is being considered a success. More than 12-hundred vehicles were brought down by 3 p.m.

RCMP say they’re still doing patrols of Fort McMurray to find and help evacuate people who haven’t left yet. That includes areas frequented by homeless people. Late Thursday, an elderly gentleman and his dog were taken to safety. A family of five with three elementary school-aged children was found not complying with the evacuation order as they believed they weren’t in danger.

There has been only one report of theft, a the local man suspected of the break in was arrested in his home after being tracked down by Police Dog Services.
