Alberta now under temporary off-highway vehicle ban

A temporary provincial restriction on the use of off-highway vehicles is now in effect for all of Alberta. Minister of Environment and Parks Shannon Phillips says it’s a big step to make, but argues that their use in these conditions could contribute to an already “catastrophic” wildfire season.

The ban applies to recreational use on public lands, including designated OHV trails. It does not apply to agriculture, public safety or commercial/industrial users who operate OHVs for farming, enforcement or business purposes.

The ban comes a day after a fire ban was implemented province-wide, along with the use of incendiary targets on Crown lands. Wildfire management staff, along with conservation officers and fish and wildlife officers will be enforcing the restriction immediately.
