Fire restriction issued for entire Alberta Forest Protection Area

With well above average temperatures across the province, a fire restriction has now been issued for all of the Alberta Forest Protection Area. All burn permits have been suspended or cancelled and no new ones will be issued. Campfires will only be allowed in fire rings in designated campgrounds and no open fires will be allowed in the backcountry or in random camping areas.

There are only four active wildfires in the Grande Prairie region, including one that started yesterday just north of the Norbord mill. It’s under half a hectare in size and is considered under control with firefighters, heavy equipment and helicopters attacking it.

The wildfire hazard in the area is extreme and a fire advisory is still in effect. A fire ban is back in place for the entire County of Grande Prairie. Any burning should be postponed and no new permits will be issued.
