Spring cleaning starts with City Scrub next week

It’s time to get rid of the garbage that has appeared after the snow melt. The Grande Prairie City Scrub will be taking place May 6th to 15th. Manager of Environmental Stewardship with the city Michelle Gairdner says this is an opportunity to get the city looking nice and prepped for the seasonal staff.

“So part of the reason for the city scrub is getting it tidy but the other part of it is engagement about your surroundings. You understand your environment and you are aware of it. You are more aware of the implications of just tossing something”

She says it is a community job to keep the city clean. The city wants anyone taking part in the city scrub to post on social media with the hashtag City Scrub 2016.

“We are trying to get people to report. So, we know there are a lot of people out there that are picking up garbage regularly but we would like them to report. It would give us an idea of the number of bags.”

There will be a draw for prizes at the end including punch passes for the Eastlink Centre and other gift certificates.

She adds that there is about 6000 people engaged in the process by the end including schools and community organizations.

You can contact the city if you need a recommendation on where to clean and pick up free bags as well as gloves as various stores. Aquatera Customer Billing Office and the Eco Centre will be handing out bags. There will also be bags available at the Burger King, City Hall, City Service Centre, Eastlink Centre, Good to Grow, Muskoseepi Park Pavilion, and Tito’s Bistro.

The City Scrub began in 2005 to help get the green spaces going for the summer.
