Champion’s Cup marks final outing for curling’s Team Simmons

When the Champion’s Cup in Sherwood Park wraps up Sunday, it will mark the end of Team Pat Simmons’ time together. Nolan Thiessen and Grande Prairie’s Carter Rycroft plan to step back from competitive curling, potentially for good. Also from the Swan City, alternate Tom Sallows hopes to make it a meaningful farewell for his mentor.

“I don’t know if Carter knows how we all looked up to him, and that’s why to me this weekend is so special. If it is his last event, I think he deserves a lot of recognition and to be honoured by the curlers and the sport itself. He’s been such a great representative of not only the Peace, but the sport.”

Sallows will throw second stones this week while Rycroft replaces John Morris in third. With the team splitting up, he wants to keep representing the Peace region.

“I’m going to probably stay local, but no final decisions have been made; I’m not going to make any decisions until after this event. I’ve definitely been talking to some people and unless it’s a top team or a well-established team, I’m going to stay with the local guys; they’ve been really good to me in the past.”

The inaugural Humpty’s Champion’s Cup features plenty of other local talent, including Beaverlodge’s Geoff Walker on Team Gushue and Sexsmith’s Daylan Vavrek on Mick Lizmore’s team.
