New school in Arbour Hills area named

The school set to be complete by September 2018 in Arbour Hills has been named. The Grande Prairie and District Catholic School Trustees chose the name Bishop Grouard Junior Senior Catholic School.

A “Name Our New Schools” contest was set out with 83 participants which provided the Trustees 58 name suggestions to choose from. They wanted the name to put emphasis on a local person who had a positive impact on the development of the area.

Grouard advocated for and ministered to the Beaver and Iroquois-Metis people in the peace region. His work with these people later lead him to learning and writing books in Chipewyan, Beaver languages and Cree. To reflect his love of music and art, the new school will have a Multi-Purpose Performing Arts Centre.

Construction on the second largest infrastructure project in the Grande Prairie area will begin this summer 2016.
