Alberta’s environmental monitoring agency a “failed experiment”

The Alberta Environmental Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting Agency is being folded into the provincial government.

An independent review found that the system established in 2014 wasn’t the right model to oversee environmental monitoring in the province. Calling it a “failed experiment”, the report says it was costly and had issues maintaining relationships.

Instead, the NDP is creating a new Environment and Parks division, with two expert panels. The Science Advisory Panel will report on the province’s monitoring and science system, while the Traditional Ecological Knowledge Advisory Panel will work with Indigenous communities to make use of community-based knowledge.
