All but one Alberta school board meet gender identity policy deadline

Only one of Alberta’s 61 school boards failed to submit their draft LGBTQ policies by today’s deadline. Lethbridge School District number 51 has indicated they wouldn’t submit on time, as they’ve decided to form a committee. They’re not scheduled to finalize their recommendations until April 26th, but Education Minister David Eggen says they aren’t facing any sanctions yet.

The gender identity procedures have been met with concerns by some Catholic leaders in the province who belief they violate religious beliefs. Several parents have also expressed worries about transgender students using the washrooms and change rooms of their choice.

So far, 81 of 100 private schools have sent their policies in, along with 13 charter schools. Reviews of the proposed guidelines will start this month.
